A baby camel walks through the ruins
The Palmyrenes practiced mummification, and the nearby Valley of the Tombs holds both tower tombs (multistorey burial chambers) and hypogeum tombs (underground burial chambers). This hypogeum was reconstructed and is now located in the National Museum in Damascus.
The view from the top row of the theatre: the Tetrapylon (marking the junction between thoroughfares) to the rıght in the foreground, with the Arab Citadel in the distance on the hilltop
The Arab Citadel, in the late afternoon sun
